I love newspapers – I love the ritual which accompanies my Saturday mornings with my newspaper. This morning’s Insight section of the Star includes a story on youth Roya Shams who is defying some of the current local beliefs that girls should not attend school. Roya puts her right to safetey and security in peril in order to invoke her right to an education – all outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (the Convention).

This piece could easily be used any secondary english, world studies, or history course through the lens of global education and children’s rights. Global education should empower youth to look towards the future and empower youth to take action.
UNICEF’s resource Education for Development includes a theme on change and the future and has many activities which could be adapted to include this piece. (Be patient the document is slow to load)
Some ideas for integrating this article into your class:
- Students find and interview someone relevant to this piece within their own local communities for their opinion and write a follow-up article. Students then share their articles and discuss the different perspectives.
- Students identify which rights are being affected both directly and indirectly by Roya’s situation and write a letter to the country making recommendations on the country’s ratification of the Convention
- Have the students research the impacts on a country politically, economically, and socially when a gender is denied the same access to education and develop possible solutions to the situation.
